Profile

Mr Mohd Afiq Mohd Slim is a Consultant ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) Surgeon at Ross Hall Hospital in Glasgow. He has a special interest in rhinology, which is the diagnosis and treatment of nose and sinus problems. He also treats a wide range of general ENT conditions affecting the nose, sinuses, ears and throat.

Mr Mohd Afiq treats many nose and sinus conditions. One is chronic rhinosinusitis. This is when the sinuses stay inflamed over a long period. It can happen with or without nasal polyps, which are soft, painless growths inside the nose. He treats both new cases and cases that return after earlier surgery. He also treats a deviated septum, which is when the wall inside the nose sits off-centre. Other conditions he treats include nosebleeds, hay fever, and other allergies that cause a blocked or runny nose. He also treats watery eyes caused by blocked tear ducts, a growth called inverted papilloma, and a hole in the septum known as septal perforation.

To treat these conditions, Mr Mohd Afiq carries out endoscopic sinus surgery. This uses a thin camera to operate inside the nose, without any cuts to the skin. He also performs septoplasty, which straightens the septum. Septorhinoplasty combines this with reshaping the nose. This can help patients with a sunken "saddle nose" shape. His other procedures include adenotonsillectomy, which removes the adenoids and tonsils, and grommet insertion for the ears. He also carries out microlaryngoscopy, which examines and treats the voice box, and removes benign lumps in the head and neck.

Mr Mohd Afiq qualified in medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2011. He then trained as a surgeon in Otorhinolaryngology in the West of Scotland. He became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. In 2022, he gained Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in Otorhinolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery. He holds an MSc in Advanced Surgical Practice with Distinction from Cardiff University. He also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education from the University of Dundee. He completed further training in rhinology and endoscopic skull base surgery at McMaster University in Canada.

Alongside his clinical work, Mr Mohd Afiq is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Glasgow. He is also involved with the British Rhinological Society Juniors. He has carried out audits and published research to improve surgical outcomes in ENT. He has presented this work at national and international conferences.

Patients describe Mr Mohd Afiq as friendly, honest and approachable. He takes time to listen and explains conditions in plain language. He works with each patient to find a treatment that suits them. His consultations are supportive, helping patients feel informed and confident about their care.
