Trusted, specialist care for your lungs and airways – diagnosis to advanced treatment.
Your lungs and airways are critical to everyday life – from breathing comfortably to staying active. Whether you’re experiencing persistent cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, or chest discomfort, our specialists use advanced diagnostics (imaging, bronchoscopy, and biopsy) to find the cause.
When it’s time to see a lung specialist
If you’ve been experiencing persistent breathlessness, a cough that doesn’t improve, unexplained weight loss, or chest discomfort, it’s worth getting checked. Many lung conditions respond well to early intervention – and the sooner you have clarity, the sooner you can breathe easier.

Common lung conditions our specialists manage
Respiratory and lung symptoms are common but can signal many different conditions – from mild to serious. Knowing what to look for and seeking evaluation early can lead to better outcomes. Below are key conditions we see often.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
A long-term condition that makes breathing gradually more difficult, most commonly caused by smoking or long-term exposure to irritants such as dust or chemicals.
Asthma & reactive airways
Conditions that cause the airways to become inflamed and narrowed in response to triggers like allergens, exercise, or infection – causing symptoms like coughing, wheezing and breathlessness.
Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD)
A group of lung disorders causing scarring and stiffness in lung tissue – making it more difficult to breathe over time.
Lung & bronchial cancer
Referring to a serious condition when cells in the lungs or airways grow in an abnormal way. It can cause a cough, coughing up blood, chest pain, or shortness of breath. Early diagnosis is important, as treatment is more effective when started sooner.
Pleural conditions
These are conditions that affect the lining around the lungs, known as the pleura, resulting in a fluid build up or air leaks, impacting breathing.
Chronic cough & recurrent infections
Persistent cough or frequent chest infections may be an indicator of an underlying lung condition and should be investigated.
See what our patients have to say
Dr. Kalkat provided outstanding care during our consultation. His expertise was evident in the clear communication and thoughtful guidance regarding treatment options. He ensured we understood every step of the process and addressed all our questions with patience. The combination of technical skill and genuine compassion made a significant difference for my family. I highly recommend Dr. Kalkat.
— Patient of Maninder KalkatThank you for your extremely quick response to our initial enquiry. Within a few days my husband had a consultation and the operation was undertaken the following week. We cannot thank you enough for everything from the initial meeting to post operation care. Mr Kalkat’s professionalism made an extremely worrying experience bearable as we had every confidence that my husband was in good hands.
— Patient of Maninder KalkatMy first appointment with Mr Kalkat was on Zoom at Herefordshire County Hospital. While he came across a very professional, I think virtual consultations are less than ideal. I was admitted to The Harborne Hospital very quickly for lung cancer surgery and was taken aback by the empathy and warmth I felt from him when he visited me before surgery. His explanations were very clear and he was very calming. Following surgery he spent a long time going through the outcome with my daughter, a Stage 4 Lung Cancer sufferer. He visited me every day and guided me through my recovery. I couldn’t recommend him highly enough.
— Patient of Maninder KalkatOverall, I was very impressed with Mr Kalkat, who was recommended to us by Mr Rob Stevenson - Oncologist. Mr Kalkat made me feel very at ease for what is a difficult experience and I left the room with every confidence in him.
— Patient of Maninder KalkatMr Kalkat provided exceptional care and ensured I received the highest standard of attention. I am deeply grateful for his assistance.
— Patient of Maninder KalkatMr Kalkat is the best in his field with a world-reknowned reputation. We are lucky to have him in Birmingham. He has been one of the consultants looking after me for over 7 years and I would not trust anyone else other than him. Thank you for always going above and beyond for me and all your patients.
