Dr Sophia Than is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist providing private care at The Harborne Hospital (Birmingham). She specialises in the assessment and management of complex gastrointestinal and liver conditions, with a particular focus on hepatobiliary medicine, inflammatory bowel disease, and liver disease.
Dr Than diagnoses and treats a wide range of conditions affecting the gut and liver, including reflux disorders, functional bowel conditions, and abnormal liver function. She has a particular interest in hepatobiliary disorders and sees patients with complex or undiagnosed liver conditions who require specialist input.
Her procedural practice includes gastroscopy, colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and polypectomy, enabling accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment for her patients. These advanced endoscopic techniques allow precise assessment of the gastrointestinal tract with minimal disruption to the patient.
Dr Than graduated with an MBBS from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 2006 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) in 2019. She holds a substantive NHS consultant post at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, where she has been practising since 2020.
Dr Than serves as Deputy Training Programme Director for Gastroenterology within the West Midlands Deanery and has recently been appointed Deputy Chair for Education with the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG). She has held leadership roles in teaching and training resident doctors and medical students and is actively involved in research aimed at advancing care in gastroenterology and hepatology.
Dr Than takes a personalised, patient-centred approach to medicine. She takes time to understand each individual's concerns, provides clear explanations of findings, and involves patients fully in decisions about their care.

Dr Than is very personable and professional, which makes you feel comfortable in the procedure. Within the procedure, she clearly explains what is going to happen and what she is doing, this is very reassuring and gives the patient confidence She is also extremely knowledgeable and takes her time to ensure that you understand any medical terminology. In the outpatient appointments, I really appreciate the time and care Dr Than gives, she ensures that all my questions are fully answered and that I leave feeling reassured.

Professional, & clear discussion with Dr Than. Management plan created She also identified that I was in Atrial Fibrillation and suggested I went immediately to A & E -which I did.

The doctor (and all staff involved) was very kind and reassuring, especially as I had never had a gastroscopy done before. She explained everything before and during the procedure, as well as summarising the results straight away.

Dr Than is always professional, polite and makes me feel like I am the only patient that is in need of help. Never rushing me to explain myself and listens to my every word . Dr Than provides clear, concise information and helps me to understand what is happening and what the next steps will be. Dr Than really does excel the Trust values and always shows me compassion when I have broken down over the years trying to get answers. I am glad that she is my Doctor. Thank you
