Dr Smruta Shanbhag, known as Ruth, is a highly experienced consultant gynaecologist and gynaecological oncology surgeon offering private care at HCA The Harborne Hospital, Birmingham, alongside her NHS practice at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire. She specialises in laparoscopic and robotic surgery for benign and malignant gynaecological conditions, including menstrual abnormalities, pelvic masses, and gynaecological cancers.
After graduating from Goa University in 1995, Dr Shanbhag completed postgraduate training in gynaecology and subspecialist training in gynaecological oncology at James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough. She served as a consultant in Glasgow for nine years before relocating to the West Midlands, where she remains the only private consultant offering gynaecological oncology services in Coventry and Warwickshire.
Dr Shanbhag provides expert care in minimally invasive procedures for conditions such as heavy periods, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and complex gynaecological cancers. Miss shanbhag was very professional. She took a detailed history and examined properly. I didn’t feel dismissed when I explained my symptoms to her. She took her time to also explain what she thought was going on with me. I had some other issues and because there was still some time during the appointment she offered to help me sort them out.

Had a visit at 20 weeks pregnant and everything ran smoothly. Dr Smruta was lovely and so was the other nurse in the room. I got made to feel at ease despite feeling very nervous and the appointment had a positive outcome.

I recently underwent a radical hysterectomy under the care of Miss Shanbhag, and I genuinely could not have asked for a better experience. From our very first meeting, she was warm, compassionate, and incredibly knowledgeable — I felt safe and completely confident in her hands. What truly stood out was the level of personal care she provided. Despite having a long and demanding day in surgery, she still made the effort to come and check on me in person throughout my stay at hospital. That simple gesture meant so much — it showed not just her dedication as a surgeon, but her deep kindness and commitment to her patients' well-being. Her skill, professionalism, and empathy made an incredibly challenging time much easier to face. I’m so grateful to have had her as my surgeon, and I can't thank her enough for the exceptional care she provided throughout my journey.
