Profile
Miss Sarah Addison is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon providing private care at The Priory Hospital (Birmingham) and HCA The Harborne Hospital (Birmingham). She specialises in bowel and colorectal surgery, hernia repair and the treatment of common anal and bowel conditions, with particular expertise in keyhole (laparoscopic) techniques. Miss Addison also holds an NHS consultant post at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
Miss Addison diagnoses and treats a broad range of conditions. These include bowel cancer (colorectal cancer), diverticular disease, haemorrhoids, anal fissure, anal fistula, pilonidal sinus disease and hernias, including inguinal, umbilical, incisional, femoral and Spigelian hernias. She also sees patients with skin lesions and lipomas that need to be removed.
Her surgical practice includes keyhole bowel surgery (laparoscopic colectomy and sigmoid resection), reversal of Hartmann's procedure, haemorrhoidectomy, haemorrhoidal artery ligation operation (HALO), banding of haemorrhoids, lateral internal sphincterotomy (a small procedure to treat anal fissures), pilonidal sinus surgery and anal fistula surgery. Miss Addison also performs colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and both open and keyhole hernia repairs. Her advanced training in laparoscopic surgery means many procedures can be carried out through keyhole techniques, which typically means a shorter stay in hospital and a quicker recovery.
Miss Addison graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1996 with an MB ChB and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in General Surgery (FRCSEd (Gen Surg)). She completed her higher surgical training in general and colorectal surgery across the West Midlands in 2009. During her training, she carried out a laboratory research post in East Anglia and was awarded a regional travelling fellowship to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St Louis, USA, where she trained in advanced laparoscopic surgery and peritoneal cancer techniques. She joined the colorectal department at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in 2018.
Miss Addison is known for her thorough, clear approach to explaining diagnoses and treatment options. She takes the time to listen to each patient's concerns and makes sure they understand the next steps in their care. Her manner puts patients at ease, particularly when discussing symptoms that can feel sensitive or embarrassing. Whether providing a first assessment or planning surgery, she tailors her approach to each patient to achieve the best possible outcome.

My illness had placed me in an anxious and worried state, as everything felt unclear and my options were uncertain. I felt like I had little hope or control, as illness often does even to the best of us. I was referred to Ms. Addison, who was welcoming, brilliant, attentive, and solution-oriented. She is knowledgeable, empathetic, reassuring, and truly present. These words still cannot fully describe the quality of care she provides; she is a breath of fresh air. Simply amazing.
