Mr Sam Chan is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Birmingham.

Mr Chan originally grew up in Yorkshire and came to study medicine at the University of Birmingham in 1998. He qualified in 2003 and specialised in Orthopaedics on the West Midlands rotation. In this time, he has trained in many of the hospitals in the region. He further sub-specialised in upper limb surgery with an in-training Fellowship at the Hand, Shoulder & Upper Limb Unit at the prestigious Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry as well as a Shoulder & Elbow Fellowship with Peter Brownson (past President of the British Elbow & Shoulder Society 2017-19) at the Liverpool Upper Limb Unit.

Mr Chan was appointed Consultant in 2016 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, which is home to the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine (RCDM) and major trauma centre, as well as being the regional tertiary referral unit for complex upper limb injuries. In this environment, he has honed his expertise in managing complex shoulder and elbow problems and has a busy practice with a particular interest in complex upper limb reconstructive surgery and complex elbow conditions.

His interest in complex upper limb problems has led him to be one of the regional experts in providing elbow replacements. He has also been involved in the development of clinical pathways across primary and secondary care for the management of elbow conditions.

He is a fellowship trained surgeon and manages and treats a wide variety of conditions relating to the upper limb, including trauma, arthritis, instability, tendon injury and sports related injuries. He is a respected authority on shoulder and elbow conditions and is an expert in arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery, joint replacement and trauma reconstruction surgery.

In Mr Chan’s elective practice, he treats a range of conditions including rotator cuff tears, shoulder impingement syndrome, frozen shoulder, shoulder dislocation, calcific tendinitis, shoulder or elbow arthritis, tennis/golfer’s elbow, elbow instability/dislocation, tendon ruptures and ulna nerve and carpal tunnel syndromes.

Mr Chan is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and a member of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society. He has contributed to research at national scientific meetings, which ensures that he remains at the forefront of developments in shoulder and elbow surgery. He is involved in medical education and delivers training for junior doctors and trainee orthopaedic surgeons.
