Profile
Mr Raj Sahemey is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist focus on hip and knee conditions, from early arthritis through to complex joint replacement and re-do (revision) surgery. His practice centres on helping people reduce pain, improve function and get back to the activities they enjoy, whether that’s walking the dog, playing sport or simply moving more comfortably day to day.
Mr Sahemey graduated with Distinction from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2013, before completing highly competitive orthopaedic specialist training in the West Midlands. During this time, he developed particular expertise in hip and knee arthritis, primary joint replacement and complex revision surgery for failed or problematic implants. He continues to build on this experience through regular involvement in research, publishing in peer-reviewed journals and presenting his work at national and international conferences.
He looks after a broad spectrum of patients. For those with early signs of arthritis, he often recommends less invasive options such as targeted joint injections or keyhole (arthroscopic) surgery to help manage symptoms and, where possible, delay the need for a joint replacement. When arthritis is more advanced and causing significant pain or stiffness, he offers personalised hip and knee replacement surgery, carefully planning each procedure to suit the patient’s lifestyle, anatomy and goals.
A substantial part of his work involves treating patients whose joint replacements have become painful or failed over time. This can include implant wear and loosening, dislocation, fractures around the implant, infection and severe bone loss. Many of these cases are complex and may require specialised implants or custom-made prostheses. Patients are often referred to Mr Sahemey because of his experience with these challenging situations and his clear, honest approach to explaining what can be done.
Those he cares for frequently describe him as holistic, treating them as a whole person rather than focusing solely on the joint. He is known for listening carefully, taking time to answer questions and balancing the risks and benefits of each option in a straightforward way. Patients value his knowledge, transparency and the calm, compassionate support he provides when making important decisions about surgery and recovery.
