Profile

Mr Francois Runau is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon providing private care at Spire Leicester Hospital (Leicester). He specialises in laparoscopic colorectal and general surgery, offering assessment and treatment for bowel symptoms, colorectal disease and hernias. He also cares for benign anorectal problems that need clear diagnosis and treatment.

He looks after people with bowel cancer, early rectal cancers, inflammatory and diverticular bowel disease, and benign anorectal problems such as haemorrhoids, fissures, fistula in ano and pilonidal disease. He also treats groin, umbilical and incisional hernias and supports people with bowel bleeding, abdominal pain and changes in bowel habit.

His clinical practice includes colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, laparoscopic and open hernia repair and endoscopic treatments for bowel disease. He performs haemorrhoid treatments including banding and laser therapy and offers laparoscopic colorectal surgery for cancerous and non cancerous conditions. Wherever suitable, he uses minimally invasive techniques to support quicker recovery and less discomfort. Care is planned with radiologists, anaesthetists and specialist nurses so that investigations and treatment remain joined up.

Mr Runau completed his medical degree at Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Medical School in London before higher surgical and colorectal training at Leicester Hospitals. He developed further expertise through visiting fellowships at regional and European centres in modern colorectal care. He holds an NHS consultant post at Leicester General Hospital and completed a PhD in cancer treatment at the University of Leicester in 2019.

He is active in teaching, research and service development. His published work includes colorectal cancer research and studies on benign bowel disease, and he presents at national meetings. He teaches trainee surgeons and helps to develop clinical pathways within colorectal and general surgery.

Patients describe Mr Runau as approachable and thorough. He takes time to listen, explains tests and treatment choices in clear language and tailors each plan to individual needs. By combining precise laparoscopic skills with a calm, patient centred manner, he aims to provide safe, modern care and the best possible recovery and long-term results.

I have always felt that mr Runau has treated me with great respect, has always listened and delt with my situation with care. One of the most nicest doctors I have delt with, would not hesitate to recommend, or go to again.
