Profile

Mr Chuk Abraham Igwe is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon providing private care at The Harborne Hospital (Birmingham) and The Priory Hospital (Birmingham). He specialises in complex abdominal wall hernias and laparoscopic surgery, offering assessment and treatment for abdominal wall problems, bowel symptoms and benign colorectal disease. His practice brings together modern surgical techniques, clear explanations and a supportive manner.

He manages inguinal, umbilical and incisional hernias, including large, recurrent and complex abdominal wall defects, and looks after people with haemorrhoids, anal fissures, fistula in ano and other anorectal problems. He also helps people with rectal bleeding, lumps around the back passage and changes in bowel habit.

His clinical work includes colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and both laparoscopic and open hernia repair, as well as haemorrhoid banding, HALO and haemorrhoidectomy. He uses advanced reconstructive methods for complex hernias to support faster recovery and strength of the abdominal wall. Care is planned with specialist nurses, physiotherapists and anaesthetists so that investigations and treatment stay joined up and evidence based.

After graduating MBBS from the University of Nigeria in 1992, Mr Abraham Igwe completed a Master of Science in Surgical Science at Imperial College London and gained Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He went on to higher surgical training in colorectal and general surgery and developed expertise in abdominal wall reconstruction and laparoscopic techniques. He now holds an NHS consultant post at Heartlands Hospital, part of University Hospitals Birmingham.

He supervises surgical trainees, teaches advanced hernia repair techniques and contributes to research, audit and service development within colorectal and general surgery. He also serves as a military trauma surgeon at the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, gaining experience in managing injuries in demanding environments.

Mr Abraham Igwe’s approach is warm and patient centred. He explains tests and treatment options in simple language and supports shared decision making. His focus is on safety, comfort and recovery, aiming to help people return to everyday life with confidence. Outside work he enjoys playing jazz guitar and supporting charitable projects.
