Profile
Mr Benjamin Tan is a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon providing private care at The Priory Hospital (Birmingham) and The Harborne Hospital (Birmingham). He specialises in complex oesophago gastric conditions and minimally invasive surgery, offering assessment and treatment for acid reflux, hiatal hernias, swallowing problems, motility disorders and stomach conditions. His practice focuses on clear explanations, accurate diagnosis and treatment plans tailored to each person.
He looks after people with gallbladder disease, abdominal pain, bloating, indigestion and abdominal wall hernias. He manages biliary colic, gallstones, reflux disease, GORD, Barrett’s oesophagus and a range of gastric disorders. He also supports people with persistent oesophageal symptoms, working with specialist teams to keep care coordinated and evidence based.
His clinical work includes laparoscopic gallbladder removal, inguinal, umbilical and incisional hernia repair, and gastroscopy to diagnose and treat upper gastrointestinal symptoms. He uses minimally invasive techniques where suitable to support faster recovery, less discomfort and a shorter hospital stay. Care is planned with anaesthetists, gastroenterologists, dietitians and cancer specialists so that investigations and treatment remain joined up.
After graduating from the University of Glasgow with an MBChB, Mr Tan completed specialist surgical training in the East Midlands, gaining experience in general and upper gastrointestinal surgery. He completed an MD at the University of Edinburgh for research into cancer cachexia and later undertook an advanced oesophago gastric fellowship at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. He was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in 2017.
He is involved in teaching, research and academic development. He teaches on the University of Edinburgh Masters of Surgical Sciences programme and has published widely on nutrition, body composition and outcomes in oesophago gastric cancer surgery. His research continues to support improvements in care for complex upper gastrointestinal conditions.
Mr Tan’s approach is calm, clear and patient centred. He takes time to explain investigations and treatment options and works with each person to agree a personalised plan. By combining modern surgical techniques with thoughtful, supportive care, he aims to help people feel informed, confident and well supported throughout their treatment.
