Profile
Mr Benjamin Cosway is a Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgeon providing private care at Nuffield Health Newcastle (Newcastle upon Tyne) and Newcastle Hospitals Private Healthcare (Newcastle upon Tyne). He specialises in head and neck surgery and laryngology, with a particular focus on voice disorders, airway and swallowing problems, and thyroid and salivary gland conditions.
Mr Cosway diagnoses and treats a broad range of ENT conditions, including nasal obstruction, sinus problems, hearing difficulties and tinnitus. His specialist interests include voice disorders such as hoarseness (dysphonia), vocal cord lesions, vocal cord paralysis and muscle tension dysphonia, as well as persistent throat symptoms, globus sensation (the feeling of something stuck in the throat), difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) and complex airway conditions including subglottic and glottic stenosis. He welcomes patients who have been struggling without a clear diagnosis and those seeking a further opinion.
His surgical practice includes minimally invasive laryngeal surgery for vocal cord lesions and procedures for vocal cord paralysis, including injections and laryngeal framework implants. He uses laryngeal videostroboscopy, a technique that records the vocal cords in slow motion to assess vocal fold function in detail. He also performs thyroid and salivary gland surgery and operations for both benign and malignant head and neck conditions. Having developed a day-case pathway for major neck surgery at Newcastle Hospitals, many patients are able to return home on the day of their procedure. Care is planned with radiology, anaesthesia and specialist nursing teams to keep investigations and treatment co-ordinated and evidence based.
Mr Cosway graduated from Cardiff University with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBCh) and a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Public Health in 2012. He completed specialist ENT training in the North East of England, followed by fellowship training in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology. He was awarded a Master of Clinical Research (MClinRes) by Newcastle University in 2015 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (FRCS ORL-HNS) in 2022. He holds an NHS consultant post at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Mr Cosway plays a nationally recognised role in surgical training, research and professional leadership. He leads the Training Interface Group Fellowship for Head and Neck Surgical Oncology, the UK's national training programme for specialist head and neck surgeons, and co-authored the most recent UK Head and Neck Cancer Guidelines. He is a Council member of the British Laryngology Association and the laryngology representative on the vocal health group of the British Association of Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM). His research, supported by Cancer Research UK and the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), focuses on improving outcomes in head and neck cancer and persistent throat conditions. He has also established one-stop neck lump clinics in underserved communities across the North East and delivers specialist teaching for speech and language therapists working with professional voice users.
Patients describe Mr Cosway as calm, professional and reassuring, consistently noting that he explains things clearly and that they leave each appointment confident in their diagnosis and the plan ahead. He has a particular commitment to professional voice users, including singers, actors and broadcasters, and draws on his own experience as a performer to understand precisely what is at stake when the voice is not working as it should. As a member of Newcastle's Voice of the Town Choir, he has performed on some of the UK's most prestigious stages, and this firsthand experience of professional vocal demands informs the care he provides for patients whose voice is central to their work.
