Mr Anthony Perera is a Consultant Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon providing private care at Spire Cardiff Hospital (Cardiff). He specialises in conditions affecting the foot and ankle, with particular expertise in sports injuries and forefoot deformities such as bunions and hammer toes. He offers specialist assessment and treatment for ankle sprains and instability, toe deformities, big toe arthritis and persistent foot pain, with a strong focus on keyhole and minimally invasive techniques.
He manages a wide range of problems that affect comfort, movement and sport. These include bunions, hammer toes, metatarsalgia, big toe arthritis, ankle sprains, ankle instability and ligament injuries. He also assesses stress fractures and more complex hindfoot or ankle deformities. His clinical practice includes keyhole bunion surgery, toe surgery and procedures for metatarsalgia and big toe arthritis. He performs ankle arthroscopy and ligament reconstruction for instability and treats foot and ankle fractures when surgery is required. Minimally invasive techniques are used wherever appropriate to support recovery and reduce disruption to everyday activities. Care is planned with radiology, anaesthesia and specialist nurses so that investigations and treatment are joined up and evidence based.
Mr Perera graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1995 and completed orthopaedic training in the UK before undertaking specialist fellowships in foot and ankle surgery. He gained major trauma experience in South Africa and later completed advanced fellowships in Dublin with Professor Michael Stephens and in Baltimore with Dr Mark Myerson. In 2008 he was awarded the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society prize for top fellow of the year. He also works within the NHS at University Hospital of Wales (Cardiff).
Alongside his clinical work, Mr Perera contributes to research, teaching and professional education in foot and ankle surgery. He has published widely and regularly lectures on minimally invasive techniques. He has also held leadership roles within international foot and ankle societies and continues to support education and training for surgeons in this field.

First class! Mr Perera is an outstanding orthopaedic surgeon - from diagnosis to the completion of management I felt reassured and his professionalism is excellent. I was seen within a very short period of time and surgery was planned within a week. I would highly recommend Mr Perera.

I was referred to Mr. Perera through our private insurance company Aviva. From the start Mr. Perera was welcoming and following X rays, discussed treatment and corrective surgery for my bunion problem and my toes. He went through the surgery procedure, explaining clearly what he would do and what to expect after the surgery. On the day of surgery he went through everything again with me, prior to the operation. I was kept in overnight and have had several follow up outpatient appointments. I would highly recommend Mr. Perera for his excellent bedside manner, knowledge and professionalism.
