Profile

Dr Andrew King is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist providing private care at The Priory Hospital (Birmingham) and The Harborne Hospital (Birmingham). He specialises in liver disease and gastrointestinal conditions, offering treatment for symptoms such as indigestion, abdominal discomfort and abnormal liver tests. His practice focuses on clear explanations, accurate diagnosis and supportive, individualised care.

He looks after people with fatty liver disease, viral hepatitis, alcohol related liver disease and cirrhosis, as well as reflux, upper abdominal pain and unexplained digestive symptoms. He also helps people with abnormal blood tests or long-standing digestive issues. His aim is to provide timely diagnosis, clear information and a practical plan for investigations and follow up.

His clinical practice includes diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy for ulcers, inflammation, bleeding and Barrett’s oesophagus. He works closely with radiology, surgery and hepatology colleagues when liver transplantation assessment or complex multidisciplinary care is needed. Care is planned with this team so that investigations, imaging and treatment decisions are coordinated, evidence based and tailored to the individual.

After graduating from Imperial College School of Medicine in 2001, Dr King completed specialist gastroenterology and hepatology training across the West Midlands. He undertook advanced hepatology training at the Queen Elizabeth Liver Unit and received a Medical Research Council fellowship to complete a PhD at the University of Birmingham, leading the first randomised clinical trial of stem cell therapy in cirrhosis. He was appointed as a Consultant at University Hospitals Birmingham in 2015 and now works across Birmingham Heartlands Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Dr King is closely involved in training and education. He is the Training Programme Director for Gastroenterology in the West Midlands, Training Lead at University Hospitals Birmingham and a GMC accredited supervisor. He is an experienced endoscopy trainer, teaching regularly on regional courses, and remains active in clinical research so that patients benefit from the latest advances in liver and gastrointestinal care.

Patients describe him as calm, clear and approachable. He takes time to listen, explains test results and treatment options in straightforward language and develops personalised plans that support confidence and long-term health.
